Ransomware Preventive Measures

If there were a song to describe Ransomware, it would go something like this…

It’s all about the money, money, money

All we want is your money money money

We just want to make your world crash

So we could get all your cash

Okay, it sounds a little silly after saying it but hey, ransomware is real and easily the most horrible thing in the cyber world!

We feel for you if you have been a victim of ransomware before, as we all know sometimes paying the ransom does not promise that you will get your precious data back. For those of you who did get your data back, I am sure it is an experience you do not want to have to go through it again ever!

As this article by The Sunday Times has shown, ransomware is on the rise here in Singapore and unfortunately, all of us (so long as you use a computer) are not immune to it.

In the past few months, we have seen many cases of such malware attacks and some of the more common ones are the Zepto virus (.zepto), Cerber virus (.cerber, .cerber2, .cerber3), CryptoLocker (.cryptolocker)

When our clients approach us for help to decrypt these malware viruses, in some cases we are able to decrypt them. However, especially in the case of the newer virus, we have yet to figure out a way to do so.

Considering how costly it would be to be a victim of such malicious malware, you would want to make sure that you take the necessary precautions to ensure it doesn’t happen to you or your loved ones.

So, your next question would be – how to avoid being attacked by ransomware? Is that anything that I can do to prevent it from happening to me?

Of course, you can!

We have come up with a few preventive measures that you can take to minimize the chances of facing ransomware:

No, not next week, or later this week, or tomorrow, do it NOW. Those few more minutes of your time could save your life! Or you know, an arm or a leg…

But seriously, as much as it may be an inconvenience at that point of time, you are always better off and one step ahead of the malware attackers when you do a back-up of your important work. The only thing stands to lose is those few minutes of backing up your data… which eventually you have to do it anyway so, c’mon guys!

The older your computer’s software is, the easier it is for malware attackers to silently get onto your system without you realizing it. Make it a habit to update your computer software system regularly so as to reduce the likelihood of such malware attacks.

You know it when you see it. Those suspicious email titles or too-good-to-be-true links that are screaming at you to open it but do not fall for them.

Sometimes, these malware viruses may even disguise as an anti-virus pop-up alerts which makes it really hard to tell if they are real or just scams. That is why you should always make sure you turn on those pop-up blockers on your browsers to act as a firewall for these viruses. Pop-up blockers help you do the work of distinguishing normal pop-up ads from malicious ones and block these potential malware attacks.

Recently, we have received our first ransomware case for 2017!

The virus comes with the extension name “.wallet” and like most other ransomware, it encrypts the user’s files, leaving behind a number or an email address for the user to contact so as to retrieve back the encrypted data.

So far, it has proven to be malicious enough to affect not just one but a few people in the same company within a day, in just a few hours.

If you or your company has recently been hit by such malicious ransomware, do not hesitate to contact us at +65 9823 2527 or send us an email at [email protected] for further assistance. Our data recovery professionals will assist you in getting back your encrypted data as soon as possible.

Have a great week ahead, all!
